Holding space is an activity that requires an individual to take time before they begin to practice it. This is the process of learning how to be present to other people’s situations. There are times when people may need you to be there for them emotionally and that is known as holding space. Therefore, for you to hold space for another, you must practice the act of listening and also being aware of how your past may influence how you react. this skill also requires you to be emotionally intelligent so that you cannot be consumed by other peoples feelings and emotions. for this reason, you must be a therapist in such a scenario. Therefore, you must engage in someone’s emotions without being affected by the situation. You listen, acknowledge without passing any judgment.

there are some guidelines that should help you hold space for others. You must create an environment where the other person feels free to share openly. This should be done without fearing to be judged or loss of privacy of the things the clients says. Ensure that you recognize their feelings and emotions as being valid. Avoid reactions that could suggest judgement. Even when relevant, avoid making any comments or asking questions to the client. You can give ask questions when there is a break or when the session ends. This will also give you time to think. Make sure that you don’t attempt to offer a solution to the problems because you will seem subjective. If you feel like you want to give a solution about the matter, you can save it for another day. Do not agree or disagree. Trust that the individual will find a solution to the matter at hand.

When you are holding space for someone, there are some other elements that you must have at hand. Practice love and compassion. You must deal with an individual with compassion and avoid being aggressive with them. This will give them space to meditate of the things that you introduced to them. It will also create a positive environment where the other person can think.

Ensure that you listen deeply. This includes you understand the situation. This goes beyond the ears and therefore goes to listening with the heart. This way, you must choose to be a good listener and for this reason you will allow the other person to be open and say everything that is in the heart and mind.

Take a breath in between the conversations. Checking in with your breath will give you the chance to remain grounded. You will also stay connected to the body and for this reason, you will be able to connect with the other person. This will create a space where you lose all you arrogance and for this reason, you will be able to connect with the other person and listen to what they have to say.
